Donald Trump and Michele Bachmann want to call you

View Comments Retweet | Reddit | Facebook | Tumblr
I subscribe to campaign email lists so that you don't have to. This gem from Team Bachmann just landed in my inbox.

From the email:
I have an exciting announcement: On Monday night, Donald Trump will join me for a national tele-townhall -- and you're invited.

Would you like to discuss the election and my campaign with Donald Trump and me at 8:00 p.m. ET Monday? Click here to register. It's free and will only take a minute.

This is an incredible opportunity for you and everyone from Team Bachmann to hear from a businessman who knows firsthand that Barack Obama's failed policies are crippling our nation's job creators. I know I'm eager to hear Donald Trump's thoughts about the race so far and why he thinks retiring Barack Obama is a top priority for our businesses and families.
In my last post about the Bachmann campaign I suggested that there was an opportunity for her campaign to get back into the race provided that anyone on her team was smart enough to do something about it. I guess now we know there isn't and they aren't.

Note to Team Bachmann: not that you want my advice but if you want to stop being viewed as  a carnival sideshow, don't have your candidate hang around with clowns.  Photo ops with reality TV stars are the last visual you need right now. Read More......

Trump is out

Donald Trump has unsurprisingly decided against running for President in 2012. Meanwhile his racist statements while he was considering running for president are the cause of a major boycott movement that is now targeting Pepsi. Meanwhile, while he was running for president his ratings dropped rapidly.

I'll leave the last word to Seth Meyers who roasted Donald Trump at the White House correspondents dinner.

Romney leads in NH while Pawlenty drops 5 after he announces

View Comments Retweet | Reddit | Facebook | Tumblr
The newest WMUR Granite state poll is out and it shows that Mitt Romney is maintaining a big lead in his adopted home state. Meanwhile former Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty who posted a respectable 7% showing before he announced in February is now at 2% (PDF) in the latest poll behind fringe candidates Donald Trump, Ron Paul and Michelle Bachmann.

Pawlenty has been hitting the trail and meeting voters for about a month and his standing in the granite state has only deteriorated. Could he be the first serious candidate to drop out?

Donald Trump classes up Vegas with F-Bombs

The video pretty much speaks for itself, but I'll simply add that anyone who thinks the difference between what is currently being done and what you're doing to do in the Oval Office amounts to adding angry threats and profanity probably is not serious about being a candidate for President. Given that there are currently fast-moving campaigns to get The Apprentice advertisers to drop the show due to Trump's outlandish racism qua birtherism by @DumpDTrump and ThinkProgress, you'd have to imagine that Trump's profanity just gives advertisers another reason to back swiftly away from him...something that would hardly qualify as a savvy business move on Trump's part in my book. The RNC is partly responsible for Trump Birtherism

View Comments Retweet | Reddit | Facebook | Tumblr
The RNC's chairman, Reince Priebus released a statement immediately after President Obama released yet another version of his birth certificate this morning.
As I’ve repeatedly stated, this issue is a distraction. Our economy is strained from out of control deficits, debt, and unsustainable entitlements. The President ought to spend his time getting serious about repairing our economy, working with Republicans and focusing on the long term sustainability of Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. Unfortunately his campaign politics and talk about birth certificates is distracting him from our number one priority – our economy.
It should be noted that Priebus has no ground to stand on when talking about birtherism inside the Republican party. Approximately three weeks ago Priebus called Trump in the midst of his conspiratorial birther campaign. The meeting was to validate Trump's place inside the Republican party as a serious candidate and Priebus didn't condemn Trump or get him to stop pushing a discredited conspiracy theory. From Politico, three weeks ago.
Nonetheless, the call is validation of Trump's role on the national scene and his draw for the GOP right now, at a time when many Republicans are bemoaning their choices for 2012 and looking for something fresh.

Sources said it was a brief discussion and largely about saying an initial hello, but that it touched on Trump's strength in the recent poll.
Two weeks ago a US News and World Report reported that Priebus told birthers to "shut up" but in a very unusually public move Priebus went to twitter to deny that he had told Trump to "shut up" about birtherism.

The RNC and Reince Priebus are playing two games, helping foster birtherism in the Republican party while denouncing the President for trying to put it to an end. Read More......

Tax time for Trump

View Comments Retweet | Reddit | Facebook | Tumblr
Think Progress reminds us that it may be time for Donald Trump to release his tax returns:
Last week, Trump told ABC’s George Stephanopoulos that he’d release his tax returns when Obama released his birth certificate:
TRUMP: I have a great company, I’ve done a great job which I’ve run you’ll see what a great job because I’ll do a full disclosure of finances.

STEPHANOPOULOS: Including tax returns?

TRUMP: Maybe I’ll do the tax returns when Obama does his birth certificate.
I don't expect Trump's release will be that fast. For one, he isn't a candidate yet, as he made clear repeatedly in his victory-claiming press conference. But I don't think the calls for Trump to release his tax returns will be noticably quieter than the calls for Obama to release his birth certificate. If Trump is smart, he'll just release them and be done with it. Read More......

He must know stuff

Cliff Schecter at Al Jazeera English:
As tennis player Andre Agassi used to say in ads for Nikon, "image is everything".

In Trump's case, he has used over-the-top self-promotion and atavistic bravado to sell himself as the most successful businessman ever. Once that was largely accomplished, no number of declarations of bankruptcy for his casino empire (are we on two now, or three?... It's pretty easy for one to lose count) or even the destruction of a professional football league (see USFL) could change that. It was a set narrative, and the media doesn't do introspection.

So, like so many of the famous who have not done anything of value to have earned that distinction, Paris Hilton, Levi Johnston, The Real Housewives of Everywhere - this walking Jersey Shore character is now ubiquitous on news shows. Worse, he's considered a knowledgeable source on a whole range of issues, particularly business regulation, budgets and other financial matters.

After all, he's on TV, so he must know stuff!

Trump has also internalised another modern development in our TV culture, namely, the more extreme and nasty one is, the more attention the media grants them.
I think Schecter gets at the tensions with Trump well. He's known as an incredibly successful businessman, but so many of his projects have ended in failure and most of his wealth is inherited. He's a bore and a goon, but he's successfully exploited his B-list celebrity to head to the top of the Republican primary field in the polls. It's a hard thing to watch, especially as he bases so much of his campaign around headline-grabbing Birtherism. Trump may be demonstrating a solid grasp of how the media works in the US, but he also could be the least substantial presidential candidate in recent memory. At least for the moment, this is the man who leads the Republican field. Read More......

RNC chairman does not want to discourage birthers

Straight from the twitter account of the chairman of the Republican party, denying that he is discouraging Donald Trumps birther rants. Reince Priebus is the chairman of the RNC, he's as high up as you get inside the Republican party at the moment.

Nate Silver on the Trump surge

View Comments Retweet | Reddit | Facebook | Tumblr
Following yesterday's CNN poll which showed Donald Trump tied for the lead nationally with Mike Huckabee, Nate Silver of FiveThirtyEight takes a hard look at the Republican race and sees a very flawed field. First, Silver makes a fairly useful distinction between the parts of the primary field who are approved by Beltway Republicans (Romney, Pawlenty, Huntsman, Barbour and Daniels) and those who are seeking to run through Tea Party and social conservative support (Palin, Bachmann, Ron Paul, Gingrich and Trump). Silver calls the first group the Fairfax Five and the second the Factional Five (left uncategorized are Huckabee, Santorum and Giuliani).

What's more interesting is Silver's observation that Trump's surge comes through the counterintuitive path he has set out for himself as a candidate.
If Mr. Trump were going to run for president, it might have been more natural for him to do so as a social moderate but fiscal conservative, touting his executive experience and the virtues of free-market capitalism. Instead, he’s run far to his right, giving voice to false and misleading claims about Mr. Obama’s birth certificate, and reversing his prior, more moderate positions on gay rights and abortion.
Silver then looks at polling for the race and sees what we've pointed out here repeatedly: the Beltway approved candidates largely do not play well outside of the Beltway. Trumps rise has come at the expense of Romney and Palin. While Intrade betting markets give the Beltway approved candidates a better chance than polls currently suggest, they are hardly determinative. Instead, the current polling and Trump's rapid rise by embracing Birtherism suggest the inadequacy of how most of the field is running.
If Mr. Trump, with such a cynical strategy, can rocket up in the polls so quickly, that suggests that the Fairfax Five and the Factional Five are both flawed in their own way. Instead, I suspect the value bets in markets like Intrade — and by extension, relative to conventional wisdom — are those candidates who belong to neither group.
The key to all of this analysis is that Mike Huckabee is at the top of the average of three national polls and Silver hasn't fit him into either core of candidates. Huckabee doesn't fit as easily into the boxes Silver sets out, in part because he's already a well-known commodity among Republican voters. He doesn't have to come to DC to get approval from George Will to be recognized by voters. He also doesn't have to dive deep into Birtherism to get a media hit. If Huckabee decides to run, something which is by no means a certitude today, he will be able to avoid a lot of the baggage both of Silver's cohorts have to deal with in order to pursue the nomination. If Mike Huckabee reads Nate Silver or this blog, I'm guessing he will be encouraged by what he sees. Read More......

Trump tied for lead in national poll

View Comments Retweet | Reddit | Facebook | Tumblr
CNN has a new national poll out which puts Donald Trump tied for the lead in the Republican presidential primary. In other words, there's a good chance that the Republican Party will be as dead as whatever it is that is glued to The Donald's head.
Donald Trump is now tied with Mike Huckabee for first place when Republicans are asked who they support for the GOP presidential nomination in 2012, according to a new national poll.
...
Nineteen percent of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents questioned in the poll say that as of now, they'd be most likely to support Trump for next year's GOP presidential nomination. Trump says he'll decide by June whether he runs for the White House. An equal amount say they'd back Huckabee. The former Arkansas governor and 2008 Republican presidential candidate says he'll decide by later this year if he'll make another bid for the White House.

Twelve percent say they'd support former Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska, who was the party's 2008 vice presidential nominee, with 11 percent backing former Massachusetts Gov. and 2008 White House hopeful Mitt Romney and the same amount supporting former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. Seven percent say they are backing Rep. Ron Paul of Texas, another 2008 presidential candidate, with five percent supporting Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota, who enjoys strong backing from many in the Tea Party movement. Everyone else registers in the low single digits.
The running order is Trump, Huckabee, Palin, Romney, Gingrich, Ron Paul and Bachmann.

Trump has done a great job getting his name in the news over the last month, largely through an outlandish foray into Birtherism. Combine that with his reality tv show celebrity and I find it hard to believe that most of this isn't just about whose name GOP primary voters have heard the most often. Of course that doesn't diminish the challenge Trump poses to the professional political field (nor does his statement that he will likely run as an independent if he doesn't win the GOP nomination). On Fox News Sarah Palin agrees with birthers about Obama's birth certificate

View Comments Retweet | Reddit | Facebook | Tumblr
There's very little dog whistle going on in this clip. Sarah Palin, giving trump some "verbal support" for his fake investigation into President Obama's birth place and certificate. This ran late into the night on Fox News which begs the question, why in the world would Sarah Palin destroy any stature she already has to follow the less popular Donald Trump off the birtherism cliff at a show that doesn't even run in prime time. If you're going to commit political suicide by coming out as a birther, why not just do it on a popular show that conservative birthers actually watch?

The myth (smear is actually much more accurate) is so prevelant that among Republican activists and politicians that the state of Hawaii actually has a website up providing a copy of the birth certificate and debunking common smears. Read More......

Trump talks with Priebus

View Comments Retweet | Reddit | Facebook | Tumblr
File under "Things That Make Legit Candidates Sad." Maggie Haberman reported last night:
Donald Trump chatted with Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus Thursday afternoon, a phone call that fell a day after national polling showed The Donald tied for second place nationally in the GOP 2012 field, sources told POLITICO.

The sources described it as an introductory discussion between Trump, who’s making increasing presidential noise, and Priebus, who is working hard to build up the national party's badly beaten coffers. It was the first time they've spoken since Trump began flirting with a 2012 presidential run two months ago.
What's interesting about this is that someone in Trump's operation was thoughtful enough to tell reporters that the Donald got on the horn with Priebus. It's a smart move that makes a relative non-event (conservative billionaire talking to Republican fundraiser-in-chief) into primary news. Anything that validates Trump's candidacy is bad news for the rest of the field of contenders.

Update by Matt Ortega A couple things to add. First, a few weeks ago Priebus released an unprecedented RNC-sponsored debate/Party fundraiser plan that none of the candidates supported.

Meanwhile, Tim Pawlenty has to release over dramatic, Michael Bay short films just to get noticed. Or have staffers that get hammered and pay Iowa residents visits at 3am.

"Who is Tim Pawlenty?"

"You know, the guy running for president?"

"Uh, no?"

"He's the guy with the drunk staffer that broke into that family's home at 3am?"

"Oh, yeah, that guy." Read More......

Trump spokesperson explains social issues flip-flop

Since Donald Trump is considering a run for the Republican nomination for President he's had to change his position on social issues. He's come out against gay marriage and he's apparently come out as anti-choice. In response to why he was changing his position on social issues his special counsel responded with what may be the best quote of the week.
“People change their positions all the time, the way they change their wives,’’ said Cohen, executive vice president of the Trump Organization and the founder of a website called ShouldTrumpRun.com.

Trump would spend 'hundreds of millions' in a presidential campaign

View Comments Retweet | Reddit | Facebook | Tumblr
I don't think this will surprise anyone:
"No, I would put up a tremendous amount of money, but I think it's good when people -- I get letters all the time. I get letters where I send it back now, because I'm not a declared candidate. But I get letters and checks and money sent to me all the time. But I think that's a good thing. I think they should have sort of a feeling that they're a part of their campaign.

"So I would put up hundreds of millions if I have to," Trump concluded. "But I also think it's good when people that are supporting you contribute to your campaign."
In fairness to The Donald, Eric Kleefeld at TPM is clearly running the "hundreds of millions" of dollars as relevant when what is probably as important is Trump's hope to be funded by other people.
"I think when people invest in a campaign that's a good thing. You know, you're investing in thought. You're investing in a process."
I really encourage The Donald to ask Meg Whitman or Linda McMahon how many people came flocking to support their campaigns with donation, knowing that the candidate had an unlimited checkbook. If Trump's desire is to be funded by supporters and not be a self-funder, it may be determinative for his decision to enter the race. Sure, he can give his campaign a few hundred million dollars, but if he wanted to have a meaningful level of grassroots support, he may pass up running if grassroots support isn't forthcoming. The ability for a billionaire to spend hundreds of millions of dollars on a quixotic political endeavor is defined by the interests of someone who actually has nothing good to do with his money. Trump's interest to not be a self-funder, while not determinative of his ability to self-fund, is very relevant in assessing whether he will actually join the fray. Read More......
