He's reportedly going on a conservative media charm offensive this week. And with cause. Romney is having a hard time breaking through his lower 20-percentile support in the polls, and Newt Gingrich is the only other GOP candidate who's even vaguely popular in the GOP primary electorate. The only problem, both Romney and Gingrich are both pretty damaged - Romney for being a serial flip-flopper, and Gingrich for.... where do I begin? Gingrich has so much baggage at this point, and is so personally irascible, that it's hard to imagine voters warming up to him in the general elections. Huntsman, however, is the guy who's "too sane to be the nominee" according to a number of the pundits. Could he thus eventually get the nomination as the only viable candidate left?
One problem, Huntsman, like Romney, is Mormon. That's a problem on the left (that isn't terribly thrilled with the Mormon Church's multi-million dollar crusade against the civil rights of gays and lesbians) and on the right (that isn't terribly thrilled at the Mormon religion - remember, the religious right doesn't think Catholics are Christians, so imagine what they think of Mormons). Still, it will be interesting to see if politically smart Republicans start rallying around Huntsman as the only sane candidate in the race.
Is Huntsman the real stealth candidate in the GOP race?
