Manchester Union Leader endorses Gingrich

Retweet | Reddit | Facebook | Tumblr

In what is surely a big blow for Mitt Romney, the Manchester Union Leader endorsed Newt Gingrich for President. The Union Leader, despite confusion on the conservative Twitter-sphere, is a very conservative and somewhat influential newspaper in New Hampshire.

The Union Leader's endorsement is pretty funny in its own right and yet another statement as to how weak the Republican field is. They write:

Newt Gingrich is by no means the perfect candidate.
You don't say! I have to imagine the Romney campaign is cutting an ad now with that line to show up on screen.

What is interesting, though, is the not-so-subtle shot at Mitt Romney the editorial included:
We don't have to agree with them on every issue. We would rather back someone with whom we may sometimes disagree than one who tells us what he thinks we want to hear.
There's an authenticity problem and then there's the problem Mitt Romney has, which is that conservative activists think he is just plain lying to them about what he believes in.
