The curious hubris of T-Paw's campaign manager

Yesterday morning Tim Pawlenty announced the hiring of Nick Ayers as his new campaign manager. Ayers had most recently been the RGA's executive director who is apparently star quality in the GOP circles because he's 28 years old. In a Politico story about Mitt Romney's announcement Ayers makes it abundantly clear that the star power of the campaign is centered around him and not his boss Tim Pawlenty.

Nick Ayers, the Pawlenty campaign manager whose hire was rolled out Monday morning, joked that Romey moved up his exploratory committee launch date to dwarf his own announcement. “I’m flattered!” he said.
Via huffpost hill, he also sent a note to press that sounds like he's announcing he's running for President along with Tim Pawlenty.
Over the past six months, I have prayed deeply about my purpose in life and how best to utilize the talents God has given me. I wanted my decision to be wholly about how best to serve Him, not what was most politically or financially expedient for my family and me. As He often does in walks of faith, He has called me to a higher purpose," he wrote. "I believe that our Nation is truly on the wrong path. We need a new direction that is positive and hopeful. Simply said, we need new leadership. I believe that Governor Pawlenty is best positioned to provide that leadership. Therefore, I am pleased today to join Governor and Mrs. Pawlenty in their pursuit of the presidency."
While he led the RGA to winning record in 2010, the RGA lost more than a handful of governships in 2008 when he helmed the committee and even in the Republican year of 2010 the RGA couldn't pick some of their top targets in California, Colorado, Minnesota and Connecticut.
